The Journey of Early Childhood Education Now and Then

Early childhood education is said to be the most crucial part of a child’s learning stage. Why? It is because this stage is the starting period of a child to be trained how to learn. All things taught in this level of education can be a firm foundation for his/her lifelong learning. Early childhood education (ECE) is an instrument used by educators to expose children in some activities and experiences that will help them improve their physical, emotional, and mental abilities before entering the basic education. Through ECE children will be able to adapt and get along with developmental changes most especially in the aspect of education.
ECE How Did It Start?
The idea of early childhood education started from the father of reformation, Martin Luther. It started when he wanted young children to learn how to read since he believed that teaching them at an early age will help kids to read the bible independently. Through that idea, many famous personalities in the field of psychology and other field of related sciences after him supported and considered Luther’s claim. Some of these are, Friedrich Froebel, he believed that children can learn through play and Jean Piaget, he theorized that children should learn through direct and active interaction with the environment. These are only few of the many methods used in teaching young children nowadays.
ECE Now And Then
If time has now and then, ECE has before and after timelines too. Before, educators used to practice traditional way of educating children, this is about letting kids sit all day in their desk and listen to what their teacher is saying but as time goes by many approaches and curriculum methods in ECE has appeared. One of these is the Montessori approach, wherein a child is given a chance to be free in class to use the materials provided inside a learning room. This method is more focus on a child’s interest- individually. On the other hand, Waldorf approach is more focus on the exposure of the children to social groups in a sense that they learn stories through reading together in order to magnify their imaginations. Lastly, in Reggio Emilia’s approach it is more focused on giving the children independence to learn by exploring and experimenting in the relationship-driven environments.
Looking thoroughly to ECE’s journey through time, so far it’s becoming more relevant and significant to educators especially in terms of the way how they interact towards the youngsters. But one thing is for sure in dealing young children in their early education days, educators must make use of this opportunity to build and equip them to become more of what their usual selves are.
